Pilates at Home for Beginners: What You Actually Need

Pilates can look intimidating from the outside: specialist studios, machines with springs, a vocabulary of its own. The good news is that a beginner needs very little to start, and most of it is already in your home.

What do you need to start Pilates at home?

A mat, a bit of floor space and ten to twenty minutes. That is genuinely enough to begin.

  • A mat. Choose something with enough grip to hold your position and enough cushion for your spine. Our [Reformer Mat] is a slim 1 mm surface in a compact 96 x 56 cm, and our 3.5 mm [Yoga Mat] gives you more room and padding for floor work. Which suits you depends on your space and how much cushion you like.
  • Space. The length of your body plus a little. A corner of a living room works.
  • Comfortable clothes. Something that moves with you and stays put.
  • A short routine. Not a full class. Pick a few foundations and repeat them.

Five Pilates foundations for beginners

  1. Pelvic tilts: lie on your back, knees bent, and gently rock the pelvis. Learn to feel the lower abdominals.
  2. Bridge: lift the hips one vertebra at a time, then roll down slowly.
  3. Single-leg stretch: hold one knee in, extend the other, switch with control.
  4. Spine stretch forward: sit tall, round forward over your legs, and stack back up.
  5. Side-lying leg lifts: keep the torso steady, lift and lower the top leg slowly.

Quality beats quantity. Eight slow, controlled repetitions will teach you more than thirty rushed ones.

Should you take a class first?

Pilates is a form-led practice. An early session with a qualified instructor, in person or online, helps you learn the fundamentals and avoid compensating. After that, home practice is a great way to build consistency.

How often should you practise Pilates at home?

Two to three short sessions a week is a realistic place to begin. Consistency matters more than session length.
